Stockwell Cleaners is committed to providing professional cleaning services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, contractors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all cleaning activities, including domestic, commercial, office and specialist cleaning work.

Policy Aims and Commitments

Our aim is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing appropriate control measures. We will actively promote a positive health and safety culture and expect everyone working with or on behalf of Stockwell Cleaners to share this commitment.

We will comply with all relevant health and safety laws and regulations applicable to cleaning operations. We will regularly review our practices to ensure continuous improvement in safety performance and to reflect any changes in legislation, industry guidance or the nature of our services.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Stockwell Cleaners is responsible for implementing and maintaining this policy. This includes:

Ensuring that suitable risk assessments are carried out for all cleaning tasks and locations. Providing appropriate training, information and supervision so employees can work safely and competently. Supplying and maintaining safe equipment, cleaning products and personal protective equipment. Ensuring safe systems of work are developed, communicated and followed. Investigating incidents, accidents and near misses, and taking corrective action to prevent recurrence. Allocating sufficient resources to manage health and safety effectively.

Managers and supervisors must lead by example, promote safe working practices and address unsafe behaviour or conditions promptly.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee of Stockwell Cleaners has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must:

Follow all safety instructions, procedures and training provided. Use equipment, cleaning materials and protective equipment correctly and as instructed. Report hazards, defects, near misses and incidents to management without delay. Co operate with the company on all health and safety matters, including attendance at training sessions. Avoid horseplay, misuse of equipment or any behaviour that could create unnecessary risk.

Failure to follow health and safety requirements may result in disciplinary action.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Stockwell Cleaners will conduct and maintain written risk assessments for key cleaning activities, typical working environments and specialist tasks. These assessments will consider hazards such as slips, trips and falls, manual handling, electrical equipment, exposure to cleaning chemicals, lone working, work at height and interaction with building users.

From these assessments we will develop safe systems of work and method statements where appropriate. Employees will receive instruction on these procedures before undertaking the relevant tasks. Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to working practices, equipment, products or locations.

Use of Cleaning Chemicals and Control of Substances

Cleaning chemicals and substances will be selected, stored, transported and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable safety legislation. Safety data information will be obtained and used to assess risks and determine necessary control measures.

Employees will be trained in the safe handling and dilution of cleaning products, the meaning of hazard labels and the importance of using personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection or masks when required. Chemicals will only be decanted into clearly labelled containers and never into unmarked bottles or food and drink containers.

Equipment Safety and Maintenance

All equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines, steam cleaners and other powered tools, will be maintained in a safe condition. Pre use checks will be carried out by staff, and any faults or damage must be reported immediately so that defective equipment is taken out of service until repaired or replaced.

Electrical equipment will be visually inspected regularly, used with appropriate sockets and extensions, and never operated with damaged plugs, cables or casings. Cables will be positioned to minimise trip hazards and avoid contact with water.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, Stockwell Cleaners will provide suitable personal protective equipment at no cost to employees. This may include gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators, protective footwear and suitable clothing.

Employees are required to use the protective equipment provided, care for it properly and report any loss or damage so that it can be replaced. Failure to wear required protective equipment may put individuals and others at risk and will be treated as a serious matter.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Manual handling tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling equipment and supplies will be assessed and controlled. Employees will receive instruction on safe techniques, including keeping loads close to the body, avoiding twisting, and asking for assistance or using handling aids when necessary.

Work planning will aim to minimise heavy or repetitive lifting, and equipment will be stored and transported in a way that reduces the risk of strains and other musculoskeletal injuries.

Workplace and Client Premises Safety

When working at client premises, Stockwell Cleaners staff will co operate with any on site safety procedures. Hazards such as wet floors, trailing leads, restricted access areas and the presence of other building users will be managed through signage, barriers and careful planning.

We will take particular care where children, older people or vulnerable individuals may be present, ensuring that cleaning products and equipment are never left unattended in a way that could present a risk.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous occurrences must be reported promptly to management. Stockwell Cleaners will keep appropriate records, investigate causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.

Employees will be briefed on emergency arrangements relevant to their working locations, including fire procedures, evacuation routes and first aid provision. They must follow all instructions in the event of an emergency and support the safe evacuation of others where required.

Training, Communication and Consultation

Stockwell Cleaners will provide health and safety induction for new staff and ongoing training tailored to their roles and responsibilities. This may include safe use of equipment, chemical safety, manual handling, emergency procedures and any specialist tasks.

We will communicate health and safety information clearly and consult with employees on matters that may affect their wellbeing. Suggestions for improving safety are encouraged and will be considered as part of our continuous improvement process.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
